Reece Howden captured gold at the Youth Olympic Games on Monday in Lillehammer, Norway! The Ski Cross racer from Chilliwack, BC and the Apex Ski Club swept his way into the big final, dominating as one of the favourites in the competition. Howden was second out of the gate, but quickly made up ground and lead the majority of the heat.

Howden, 17, won the gold medal in the men's big final, beating out Belgium's Xander Vercammen (silver) and Aussie Louis Muhlen (bronze).

"Today was an awesome day," said Howden. "In the big final I was able to get out in front and was hold my line. I got bumped coming into the second last turn and but managed to get back on it and finish in first. It feels amazing to be the winner here! I'm actually a bit speechless right now. Today was the perfect day!"

Kimberley Alpine Team's Zoe Chore finished 2nd in the small SX final, for a 6th place finish overall!

FLASH QUOTES:

Max Kirshenblatt (BCST/WMSC) - "When I woke up this morning the weather wasn't looking too great for a race, but the coaches and volunteers worked hard to prepare the best surface possible. I managed to lay down two solid runs and ended the day with a result I'm happy with."

PL Dumoulin (Men's BCST Head Coach) - "Great day for young blood! He has been battling hard over the past couple of weeks with the big boys and it's good to see him getting a reward. He has been skiing well and just needed to put a run together, witch he did today. Looking forward for him to build on this result for the next couple of days in slalom, and at the U18 Nationals in Collingwood next week."

Nick Cooper (BC Alpine Head Coach) - "It was another day of tough racing conditions here out east. We set ourselves up well the first run, but left something out there the second. Kirsh stepped up and put two together for a solid result. He has worked hard all year and has been healthy for a month, so it is nice to see him perform well today. I'm looking forward to seeing what the group can do over the next two days."

FLASH QUOTES:

Antonia Wearmouth (BCST/Grouse Tyee) -
"I'm really happy with how today went. The snow froze and set up really well for the race and the sky was bluebird. I've had some really quick turns in GS recently and today I just trusted that. I stuck with what has been working lately and kept the focus up all the way to the finish. I'm excited for what tomorrow will bring!"

Ryan Jazic (Women's BC Team Head Coach) - "The icy snow made for some of the toughest conditions we've had this season, but that seems to be where Antonia excels! She built on a solid first run and there was no holding back on her way to victory."

Nick Cooper (Head Coach BC Alpine) - "It has been an up and down year for Toni in tech. We've known she's had the speed for a while, but hasn't been able to really put down two solid runs in GS yet. Today she did just that and showed what she is really capable of!"

The men raced slalom in challenging conditions that saw only 27 of 104 racers successfully complete 2 runs. BC Team's Dominic Unterberger finished just off the podium in 4th place, Max Peiffer was 7th ( wearing bib 35), Sam Mulligan came in 9th overall and Cameron Alexander rounded out the top 10 (in bib 41) - very respectable for all!

Whistler Insider Interviews Rob Boyd

Whistler Reflections with Ski Legend Rob Boyd

"The 2010 Winter Games were a barrel of good times but the single most exciting moment in Whistler's history took place on February 25, 1989 when local ski racer Rob Boyd soared down the Dave Murray Downhill on Whistler Mountain to claim gold in a World Cup Downhill race, the first man to ever do so on Canadian soil.

"Pretty much the whole town was out for the event and Whistler went absolutely bananas, the medals ceremony in then-still-relatively new Whistler Village square was the largest crowd the town had ever hosted and kids I went to elementary school with can still tell you Rob's winning time down to the 1/100 of the second (it was 2:10:03 in case you are wondering). There are a lot of legends in this town, but Rob is our biggest hero."

Howden to lead Team Canada into Youth Olympic Games Closing Ceremony

February 21, 2016

By Jessica Barrett - The second Youth Olympic Winter Games wrap up today in Lillehammer, Norway. Youth Olympic champion ski cross racer Reece Howden was chosen as Canada’s flag bearer.

The 17-year-old from Cultus Lake, B.C. will lead 53 Canadian athletes into to the Closing Ceremony this evening at Sjogg Tent at Stampesletta.

“Leading the team into the closing ceremony makes my experience here even more memorable. I felt the excitement of major international competition, the pride of standing on the podium and the joy of sharing this amazing experience with other athletes from so many different countries. I feel like this will help me grow as an athlete and a person.”

Reece was selected based on his competitive performance (1st in men’s ski cross, 4th in team ski-snowboard cross – winning all of his heats) and for his positive attitude and encouragement of other athletes throughout the Games.

“He is a tough competitor who made our country shine on the slopes and a fine young man determined to make the most of this experience,” says Isabelle Charest, Canadian Chef de Mission. “He cheered his teammates from the stands and was a constant presence in most cultural and educational activities. He exemplified the spirit of YOG.” She added, “I’m so proud of all of our Canadian athletes for their brilliant performances in competition and for having fully lived up to the ideal of these Games. They have taken advantage of the unique opportunity and shared with other athletes from different countries. They have represented Canada extremely well and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to lead a team of bright, driven and determined young individuals.”

TECK Open Super-G at Apex Mountain Resort, hosted by the Apex Ski Club
February 20 - 21, 2016

"Ski teams from across the province gathered at Apex Mountain Resort to compete in BC Alpine’s TECK Open – super-G and Night Dual Slalom over the weekend. With a mix of sun and clouds in the sky and temperatures dipping to -5, course conditions were favourable for the racers, many of whom are skiing their first season of SG. Following the race, dedicated volunteers set up the night dual slalom course on Okanagan Run for an evening of Dual Slalom under the lights. It seemed everyone had heaps of fun at this event as even the coaches were caught racing on the course." ~ posted by Caillum Smith, view photos and BLOG

The top 10 after qualifying skied-off in a 1 run "dual knock out" race. 10th and 9th place raced against each other, 8th and 7th place together, etc. all the way to 1st against 2nd place. For those 5 final runs there was no timing, as it was simply a knock out race.

"The night slalom was super fun and it got the kids pumped up! Skiing after dark under the lights is magical and made this event memorable for all," said a parent of one of the competitors. Thank you to the Apex Ski Club, Apex Mountain Resort and all the coaches and volunteers who made this special experience possible!

Congratulations to Samantha Gaul and Devin Mittertreiner for taking it all!!

FLASH QUOTES:

Max Kirshenblatt (BCST/WMSC) - "It was a pretty nice day out here in Georgian Peaks, the snow was unreal and the volunteers kept the track in great shape. I stuck to the process and managed to put two clean runs together and finish the day off with a win. I'm also very happy to have these solid results after a long time on the road!"

Nick Cooper (BC Ski Team Head Coach) - "I'm very happy for Max today, to be the U18 National GS Champion is a big deal and he has worked hard for it. I hope he can continue to push hard for three more days and end his long road trip off well."

Stef Fleck (WMSC/BCST) joins Team Canada at World Junior Championships

Eight junior Canadian athletes are heading to Sochi, Russia for the annual World Junior Championships (WJC), providing them a unique opportunity to compete on a global stage. Selected athletes between the ages of 16 and 21 will compete for Canada - an important milestone in their development for future World Cup and Olympic competition.

“The World Juniors are very important in the development of Canada’s young athletes,” says Dusan Grasic, Director of Domestic Sport at ACA. “Medals indicate athletes will be contenders on the World Cup tour. We’ve recently had great results from both the men and ladies on the NorAm circuit and we will be looking to see some podium finishes play out at the World Juniors.”

Stefanie Fleckenstein (BCST/WMSC) got the exciting news that she would be joining the Canadian woman at the World Junior Championships on a Friday evening, and by Sunday (her first day off in two weeks) she was on a flight to Europe to adjust to the time change and take advantage of a fantastic opportunity to train with the Canadian Alpine Ski Team ladies in Santa Caterina, Italy for a few days.

"Being on the World Juniors team has been a goal of mine all season and I am so excited that I was able to achieve that goal and I got the amazing bonus of getting to train with the national team for a week," said Fleckenstein. "My coach, Ryan Jazic, along with Nick Cooper and PL Dumoulin, has done a great job all year of preparing the BC Team for big competitions, so I feel ready to race."

Fleckenstein and her WJC teammate Valerie Grenier are now on their way to Sochi to prepare for the big event that gets underway on Saturday, February 27th. DH training starts tomorrow (Thursday in Sochi) at 9am, which is 10pm tonight (Wednesday) here in BC. Good luck Team Canada!!

BCST’s Max Kirshenblatt put on a commanding display of GS skiing at the U18 National Championships hosted by Georgian Peaks Ski Club in Collingwood, Ont. Max won both runs of the Championship race, and to show that his day was no fluke, he won the following day’s open GS as well. WMSC’s Kyle Alexander showed the easterners what attack from the back looks like, finishing in 7th spot with bib 108!

For the ladies’ U18 National Championship race, Quebec Ski Team’s Laurence Huot continued her strong season by taking the crown ahead of Ontario’s Brianne MacDonald. Team BC’s Kristina Natalenko secured the bronze medal with 2 steady runs, while teammate Katie Fleckenstein was 5th. The ladies’ GS FIS race on the following day was abandoned, as Mother Nature hit town with one last-gasp storm.

The U18 National Championships SL was held at the Toronto Ski Club on Blue Mountain. The top BC athlete was BCST’s Max Kirshenblatt in 15th place.

The ladies’ race was won by Laurence Huot, on her birthday, no less, securing the Quebec racer the National Championships overall title. Team BC’s Soleil Patterson was 4th with Katie Fleckenstein once again in 5th spot, +2.82 seconds off of Huot.

FIS Junior World Championships - Men's Downhill Results

Valerie Grenier

The 2016 World Junior Championships kicked off today at the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics, Rosa Khotur resort, in Sochi, Russia. The Ladies and mens Downhill race was run on the Olympic track under blue-bird sky and firm racing surface, a dramatic change from 2 days ago when the 1st DH training run was cancelled due to steady rain and fog on the course.

BC is well represented at these Championships, with Canadian National Team members Brodie Seger and Jack Crawford being joined by BCST member Stefanie Fleckenstein. Calgary’s Jeffrey Read is also representing Canada, while Mt Tremblant’s Valerie Grenier, Wakefield Quebec’s Mikayla Tommy and current Youth Olympic Games Slalom silver medalist, Toronto’s Ali Nullmeyer, round out the ladies team.

With a single training run under their belts, Valerie Grenier took full advantage of her World Cup DH experience (47th Cortina d’Ampezzo, 43rd Lake Louise) to claim the World Junior Championships by 7/100ths of a second over Switzerland’s Beatrice Scalvedi. Italy’s Nicol Delago claimed the bronze medal, .31 secs off of the pace. Stefanie Fleckenstein posted a solid 20th place in her first DH race from start number 45, +1.91secs back. Her time was the second fastest among 1997 birth year athletes, behind Italy’s Laura Pirovano.

After the race, Fleckenstein commented: “I’m really honoured and excited to be representing Canada this week in Sochi. Valerie’s win is the perfect start for our team here in Sochi. I was able to complete my first downhill race and put down a solid time, which gives me a lot of confidence heading into the super-G and alpine combined races that will be run on this same track. We have an amazing team here and everyone from coaches to technicians to athletes are really pumped up after Valerie’s win in the DH.”

Although the race was Fleckenstein’s first in the DH discipline, the BCST, with coach Ryan Jasic, has trained the speed events in the pre-season at Portillo, Chile and Stelio, Italy.

On the men’s side, both Brodie Seger and Jack Crawford put down strong runs, but a few small mistakes cost some precious speed coming on to the finish flats. Seger was top Canadian in 13th spot, +0.96 seconds behind winner Erik Arvidsson of the USA. Crawford finished 14th, a further 3/100th of a second back of Seger.

The racing continues tomorrow with the men’s super-G, followed by the ladies' super-G the next day.

Openening Ceremonies

February 25 - 28, 2016
BC Winter Games - Alpine events hosted by Apex Mountain Resort and the Apex Ski Club

As the 2016 BC Winter Games came to a close, Penticton was praised for their volunteers, venues and hospitality during the Games.

Minister of Community Sport, Development and Culture Peter Fassbender said the energy throughout the community was palpable during the Games. "Penticton has a great history," said Fassbender. "The South Okanagan has always opened its arms to tourists and we are going to continue to do that. We are blessed to live in British Columbia."

"Hospitality is in the DNA of the residents of Penticton. The hosting of these BC Winter Games has excelled on so many levels and all of the volunteers and the entire community have so much to be proud of," said Kelly Mann, President and CEO of the BC Games Society. "We look forward to seeing the future success of these 1,700 athletes, coaches and officials who performed so well this weekend."

Mann said the vision Mr. Bill Bennett had for the games - bringing families together from the four corners of the province under the banner of sport - continues today, and along with it, the Games provide the beginning of a pathway to higher sport performance.

Penticton 2016 BC Winter Games President Bill Bidlake thanked the tireless effort of the over 1,800 volunteers who made the Games a success. "There is a saying: if you want to go fast, you go alone; but if you want to go far, you go together," said Bidlake. "This weekend shows how far Penticton will go together in showcasing its passion for sport, community and youth."

Mike and Manny Ski Camp

Connecting and inspiring the next generation of Canadian youth through skiing.

Mike & Manny were supported in all areas on their road up the mountain in competitive ski racing which instilled a strong value of giving back to the sport and community that has given them so much. Their community helped them live out their dreams and when they found themselves in a position to return this favour, they absolutely wanted to.

We began with a bursary program for four enthusiastic young ski racers from BC. That next spring we launched the annual Cowboy Ski Camp, an all expenses paid four-day signature event providing coaching and ski training to up and coming athletes and see that their dreams are possible. In 2014 in conjunction with Grouse Mountain and Big Brothers, we launched an annual Community Ski Day for 20 big and little brothers. With ski racing their passion, skiing has become the vehicle to give back to the next generation, inspiring them so they too can live their dreams. This is our story.

Another strong showing from Team Canada at World Junior Championships in Sochi, Russia. The men raced their previously postponed race at 9am local time, on a firm course that froze overnight. Jack Crawford (WMSC/National Development Team) took full advantage of bib #1 to attack the smooth, fast course set on the downhill track, finishing just 37/100ths of a second off of race winner Matthieu Baillet from France, starting with bib #2. The bronze medal was won by Marco Odermatt of Switzerland, 0.53 secs off of the pace in the 74-strong racer field.

Crawford said “starting bib #1 is always a tough place to be, as you have the entire amazing field of athletes to wait for to see if your time is good enough. Before the start I was concentrating on my recent Nor-Am super-G results (win in Lake Placid, NY), which were a confidence builder, and I was thinking about skiing fast and having fun. It is so great to be in Sochi, Russia. The organizers are putting on an amazing event and the venue is spectacular. There is a lot more racing to come and I hope that my results will continue, as I hope that my Team Canada teammates will reach their potential. I’d also like to thank the coaching staff, who have done an excellent job of preparing me for these races, and the whole staff at Alpine Canada Alpin.”

Brodie SegerBrodie Seger (WMSC/National Development Team) also posted a strong showing, finishing 1 second back in 12th spot. Seger noted “the conditions since we arrived in Sochi have been tough, with dramatic temperature swings and a couple of days of rain and fog softening up the piste. The event has been a lot of fun even though I personally have not found the results that I was striving for. A couple of crucial mistakes have cost me precious tenths of a second, but my confidence is still high because me teammates have been achieving strong results. It was pretty special listening to the Canadian anthem as Valerie (Grenier) stood on the top step of the podium the other night. It was a special moment that we as a team want to repeat again soon.”

"I caught an edge coming into the middle section and missed the next gate. The experience so far has been awesome and the vibe on Team Canada is fantastic as my teammates have been on the podium. There is lots more racing on the schedule and I’m going to take what I learned today and go forward with a positive attitude.”

The World Junior Championships continue tomorrow with the men’s and ladies Alpine Combined, which has the racers doing a run of super-G combined with a one-run slalom race to determine the winner based on total time. It's a test of all-around racing, as the speed skiers tackle the slalom course and the slalom skiers try their hand at the high speeds of the SG course.
